FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
Question
Answer |
How do
ShadeZone shade structures lower
temperature?
Unlike solid construction structures,
ShadeZone fabrics are permeable, meaning
they allow air to pass through. So, instead of acting as a lid, like solid
roofs do, holding hot air against the ground, our fabric structures allow
hot air to rise upward, through the fabric, which draws outside air in for a
constant heat-reducing, cooling effect. Thats why
ShadeZone structures can reduce heat up to 15 degrees.

How much UV
protection is provided by a
ShadeZone structure?
Will provide 95% protection from UV rays.
Are ShadeZone
structures water proof?
Not typically, but we can make them that way as one of our
custom options.
How durable are
ShadeZone structures?
Our frames are guaranteed for
20 years. But we build them to last longer.
How durable is the fabric canopy or sails?
With proper care the top should last at least 10 years. We
warranty our fabrics for 10 years against UV
degradation, and we warranty the construction,
hemming and grommets for 7- years. Changes in the pigment of the fabric may
occur over time.
What kind of maintenance is involved?
Absolutely none for the frame. If a fabric top must be
replaced outside the warranty, the cost of the top is approximately 20% that
of the structure. Tops are designed for fast removal in case of hurricanes,
so storm damage can be completely avoided.

What is the difference between a frame structure and a
tension, or post and sail structure?
Frame structures are made with an upper metal frame which
supports the fabric material. A tension, also called post and sail,
structure consists of nothing more than posts with the fabric (sails)
stretched between the posts.
What is a cantilever structure?
Cantilevers have only two posts, which anchor the frame as
it stretches up and over a certain amount of space, sort of like a very
strong awning. Primarily, cantilevers are used where posts might present
safety hazards, as in a parking lot, or where they inhibit visibility, as in
bleacher covers. New England Shade Zone offers cantilevers in several
different designs.
How much area can be covered with a
ShadeZone fabric structure?
As large an area as you can imagine.
What does "free span" mean?
Free Span simply means how much area is covered without
posts. For instance, if you were covering a basketball court, you would want
to "free span" the entire court, since you cant put posts in the middle of
the court. There is a limit to how much you can free span, but that limit
depends on the type, frame or tension, and the design.

Do ShadeZone shade
structures
meet building codes?
Yes. They are designed to the Florida Building Code (one of
the most severe requirements) and the structure is tested on a computer to
ensure its wind load properties. Any unique building code requirements from
other states will be incorporated as required.
Is ShadeZone fabric
fire-proof?
ShadeZone fabrics meet
all fire standard tests.
How does the cost compare with solid-roof structures?
Fabric structures tend to cost 60-65% what a solid roof
structure costs.
What wind velocity is the ShadeZone
designed for?
ShadeZone is
designed for the wind load requirements of the local building code.
Typically, 140-mph on the coast and 110-mph inland for the structure, and
90-mph for the fabric top.
